Leaving the hospital

We want your discharge process to go as smoothly as possible. Daily updates will be given about the anticipated discharge for you and your baby. This information will allow you to make sure you have transportation and everything ready to take your infant home.

Preparation for returning home needs to start even before you come to the hospital. It is important that you select a pediatrician or family practice physician to be your baby's doctor before you deliver. Many community based pediatricians do not provide care in the hospital and utilize a pediatric hospitalist (a pediatrician who only provides services in the hospital) to see newborns in the hospital. Although a pediatric hospitalist may see your infant in the hospital, selecting a physician before hand will help assure a smooth transition for follow-up care after discharge. Newborns usually need to be seen by a physician within a few days after discharge. You will also need a car seat to take your baby home so plan to have that available for discharge.

The nurses and physicians will both provide you with information about caring for yourself and your infant. On the day of discharge both your physician and the physician seeing the your baby will need to write discharge orders. Our goal is provide you with a smooth discharge by 11:00 a.m. but this is dependent on when your physician releases you.
